The Peacock at Oxhill

 

Have you been to the Village of Oxhill… ? My Mother lives in the next Village, Tysoe and I sometimes wish that I did.  Not only because it’s a particularly beautiful area but the local pubs are great too!

 

The Peacock, at Oxhill is one such.  A 15th Century pub located in picturesque South Warwickshire between Banbury and Stratford Upon Avon. Serving cask marque beers and fresh, local home-cooked food, all freshly prepared to order.

Newly owned since December 2015, Mark Farrell and his team offer a genuine and friendly welcome at The Peacock. They aim to cater to your every need as well as offering you a superb a la carte menu in a beautiful, quintessentially English country village location.

 

Head Chef, Antoine Casalonga, has taken on the role since September 2016. He has transformed the menu to the highest standard the pub has seen in years. Antoine has vast experience gained from working all over the world and ensures all food is made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients all served in a relaxing, Rustic country restaurant environment.

 

We arrived at The Peacock for our table booked at 8.30pm and enjoyed a drink first in the busy but comfortable bar whilst we looked at the menus.

For starters we chose from the Specials board. I was recommended the hot & sizzling pan fried garlic prawns by the bar staff which came with a generous portion of warm toast and my husband loved his Chicken Liver Pâté with more warm toast and red onion chutney. The latter was an especially generous portion so beware – you need to be really hungry to devour this followed by the Steak!

 

 

Now to the main event…

For me .. a perfectly pink Cotswold Lamb rump served with Dauphinois Potato, Provençale vegetables in a Rosemary Jus was just a good choice if not a little too much for me later in the day, I must be getting old!

My husband’s Steak was washed down with a glass of Rioja, he devoured a 10 oz Sirloin Steak served with cherry tomatoes, wild mushrooms, homemade chips and béarnaise sauce. He was defeated at the end and now needn’t eat for at least a few days.

 

Dessert – a pretty perfect Panacotta is just one of the array of desserts to be found here, I found it hard to choose which to have.

My husband went safe again and opted for a Strawberry ice cream which he said was fantastic but frankly unless there’s the smell of Winter in the air and an Apple crumble and custard on the menu all serious talk of dessert is wasted on him.

 

 

There was a Fish dish on the menu but this had sold out by the time we arrived  which was a shame as I would have liked to try this lighter option and as I hear their fresh fish is delivered to the restaurant every day, with their meat coming from suppliers as close as 2 miles..hence my lamb being the Cotswold variety!

 

The Peacock consists of a sizeable bar with log-burner and 2 dining areas and their menu is served throughout. They also have a large garden area which boasts long hours of sunlight in the warmer months. Mark and his team do try and cater to every need, from weddings, funeral wakes to BBQs and canapés in your own home. They also have to facilities to provide a fully stocked outside bar, complete with marquee.

 

 

 

Located in the depths of the beautiful South Warwickshire countryside, The Peacock welcomes business from far and wide, whether its for a three-course Sunday roast or a quick stop-off sandwich during a long walk. Located off the A422 between Stratford-upon-avon and Banbury, The Peacock is an ideal location to get out of the town. Oxhill is ideally situated to explore the Cotswolds and towns such as Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Norton and Chipping Campden are less that 30 minutes away.
