Brush Lettering Workshop by The Paper Hare

Have you ever wished you could create enchanting hand lettering or watercolour projects, adorn stationery with hand lettered style and design your very own swoon-worthy botanicals. I have. I wanted to be able to do this for our wedding, to create beautiful place names by hand or to adorn the menu blackboards and mirrors with stunning hand drawn lettering and to impress my guests with newly learned bridal skills. But with one administrative nightmare after another this never did happen and I took the easy way out and the more expensive one and paid for someone to do it for me! Did you notice too that my logo is created using brush lettering… ? It really is something I have been into for a long while.

I have made up for my lack of activity and yesterday I attended a fantastic workshop run by the very lovely Georgie Nieman of The Paper Hare which was held in the quite wonderful new and VERY smart workshop space at nearby Daylesford Farm, Kingham….on of my favourite Cotswold Hotspots.

The Paper Hare is a Cotswolds based print illustration and design brand for dreamers and big hearts in the business of making pretty papery things! Over the last couple of years The Paper Hare has been busy creating bespoke designs for some of the loveliest kindred spirits and all the while adding more illustrations to the gorgeous shop (which is also a partner on NOTHS) and teaching brush lettering at their new workshops.

Inspired by old story books, tales of bravery and creatures from the wild places, Georgie makes hand painted illustrations for your home, nursery walls or workspace. Perfect for children ….and grown ups too!

Both weekend and weekday workshops provide the perfect setting to enjoy some precious ‘time off’ to immerse yourself in your new found skills. Each of Georgie’s workshops is located at one of her favourite Cotswold locations and thoughtfully designed to help you master brush lettering in a relaxed environment, supported every step of the way.

So back to yesterday!!

We started the day at 10am and as soon as everyone had arrived we got stuck straight into the basics. Starting off at the beginning, we practised with simple brush strokes, tips and techniques and got used to our equipment, all of which is included in the price of the workshop – we learnt how to use our brush lettering Koretake pens and watercolours, upward for thin strokes and down for wider ones.

Before too long we moved on to our choice of words, compositions and projects of our own, quotes or phrases that Georgie had asked us to come prepared with before the start of the class. It was definitely harder than it looks as my examples show below, I think I am going to need A LOT of practice !! All workshops include your own lettering kit so you can continue practicing long after the class has ended.

After our hard work we enjoyed a well needed coffee break served with delectable organic spiced apple and walnut crumble cake – made with fresh apple pieces, cinnamon and buttermilk from the Daylesford bakery, all demolished in a matter of minutes.

Refreshed and fed we set back to work well on our way to creating beautiful lettering and ready to confidently begin designing our own work to develop our signature style. This included learning how to blend colours and to make a selection of different Thank you cards in different styles of brush lettering. Georgie’s work below makes it look so easy!!

Attending this brush lettering workshop with Georgie was a delightful way to spend a Sunday morning in such beautiful surroundings and in good company and, despite my frustration at really not being very good at brush lettering (I discovered) it was a great way to work up an appetite for the birthday meal I had to whizz off early to attend…..I was quite worn out with concentration by the time I arrived there!

Each workshop is thoughtfully created and located from some of the Cotswolds most loved locations!
