FORMER HESTON BLUMENTHAL CHEF, CHRIS WHITE OPENS NEW RESTAURANT IN CHELTENHAM
The White Spoon which opened last month by the Young Chef Christopher White, a protégé of Heston Blumenthal, is going from strength to strength. I popped along to their official opening do this week to find out what I was missing.
Chris, a former chef from The Fat Duck and The Hinds Head in Bray is running the restaurant together with his partner, Purdey Spooner. The White Spoon is located in Royal Well Road, a few steps from The Wilson Art Gallery, very centrally located in Cheltenham.
The White Spoon is a 42-cover unpretentious, approachable and laid-back eatery serving the finest dishes made with flare. Throughout the evening an intriguing array of canapés circled the room; Breasola, Steak Tartar with Garlic Crumb and Razor Clam, Ponzu Cucumber, Pickled Dulce and Samphire to name a few!
Sadly I had to steer clear of the two canapés mentioned above, only because I am pregnant but to my delight a waiter appeared with my very own plate of baby safe canapés which I devoured all by myself!
My husband and I had a great evening chatting to bloggers alike and we cannot wait to book in VERY soon to sample the full offering from The White Spoon.

Chris’s menus will take influence from Heston’s experimental creations, yet paired down to a more accessible and familiar dining experience.
Chef Director Chris White, says
“Working with the team behind Heston’s portfolio is without question a huge influence to me and seeing where they take food is inspiring. I’m not trying to be the next Heston or follow in his footsteps. Instead The White Spoon will be a restaurant of its own style entirely and will simply draw on my learnings from Heston’s team including Clive Dixon, who was a huge mentor to me. My restaurant will bring a little touch of Heston’s magic to Cheltenham, but serving dishes to savour and enjoy, rather than scientific experiments on the plate.”
Chris has a rich culinary heritage having led kitchens at many highly regarded eateries. These have included The Red Lion in Cricklade, The Avenue at Lainston House Hotel, The Bunk Inn and The Pheasant Inn. His menus also take influence from his passion for showcasing the diversity of ways in which an ingredient can be prepared, together with time spent in France and AA accolade establishments.
The White Spoon’s name combines the surnames of Chris and Purdey and is open for lunch and dinner.
Menus feature flavours in tune with the seasons, together with more unexpected and unusual flavours. Signature starters include Goats Milk Custard and Goat Curd served with beets, scorched carrot and cob nuts.
Mains such as Blackened Sirloin of Beef, Potato Terrine with pan roasted carrot, king oyster mushroom and onion flavours will also appear on the menu.
Sumptuous puddings include a Dark Chocolate & Cointreau sponge, with white chocolate, honeycomb served with a burnt orange sorbet and a Coconut Parfait, paired with poached peaches and ginger ice cream.
The White Spoon Set Menu is priced at £17 per person for three courses and two courses at £12. Full menus are available.
