MALT Restaurant at Cowley Manor

MALT Restaurant at Cowley Manor

As part of my Spa day at Cowley Manor last week I was treated to a two course meal at their new restaurant, Malt.

Described as ‘a beautifully crafted new social dining concept’, Malt opened this summer as an all day dining concept within the highly acclaimed Cotswold hideaway, Cowley Manor.

Celebrating Britain’s culinary heritage and embracing international food influences, the new restaurant is led by Cotswold’s Head Chef James Graham. Open from breakfast time through to late at night, MALT welcomes both hotel guests and locals alike.

The Food; Reflecting Cowley Manor’s own unique blend of contemporary design and home-from-home comfort, much of the menu has been designed to share which diners can enjoy while socialising in this incredibly designed new space.

Try from their signature sharing dishes which include a selection of grazing plates such as Home Corned Beef Bon Bons with horseradish, Malt Black Pudding and 50 Day Aged Hereford Beef Tartare; alongside Fire Grilled Pizzas, Roast Rack of Pork and Cote de Boeuf for two. To finish it off, diners can share a Malteaser for two – a bombe of parfait and crunchies. MALT also serves up take-away pizzas for locals to enjoy at home!!!

The decor; Ornate lime washed panelled walls and grand tall ceilings will juxtapose against overscale spherical lighting by Moooi, modernist tables and chairs and a bold use of colour, to create a space that is both modern yet warm and inviting. Personally, I wasn’t too fussed about the chairs which seemed a little uncomfortable despite looking good. To me the unique hotel decor is reminiscent of a 1970’s London Bank, the kind my father worked in and which I visited eagerly during our half term jaunts to London. It made me feel somewhat at home, but I would appreciate that this may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

I do look forward to returning in the evening, it looks like it could be a pretty romantic spot, on a summers eve, dimly lit by candlelight and up lighters.

The Hotel Bar

There’s no escaping the great views here. I was given a lovely table, right next to tall french does looking out onto the landscape gardens beyond. A stunning vista by anyone’s standards. IMG_2526

On arrival at C Side Spa that morning I was asked to pre-order my meal and while it was in creation, an ample portion of focaccia was brought to the table.  It didn’t last that long, carbs are my new pregnancy friend!!

To follow I had ordered a Salad of Seared Feather Blade of 30 day aged Beef from the menu below.

My beef salad arrived served rare and as the Waiter approached the table, remembering I was pregnant he whipped it back to the kitchen for a little more searing!

Take two, my beef was delivered back to me with a side of skinny fries and went down extremely well. Such a shame I couldn’t indulge in a hearty glass of Red!

Seared Beef as usually served, rare.

For dessert.…a dark chocolate brownie served with pistachio ice cream and chocolate sauce arrived to my great delight and …oh my..this was the best brownie dessert I have ever eaten. Expertly cooked to just the right consistency and served looking delectable.

MALT is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner from 7.30am to 10pm. For reservations, please contact: 01242 870900 or email
